New York Stock Exchange Trip

Review of Last Year's Trip

Trip Details:

March 26-28, 2009

On March 26 and 27, the Capital Markets Research Center will be sponsoring a trip to visit several investment banks and the New York Stock Exchange.  This is a great opportunity and is open to all MSB students.  Freshman and Sophomores are especially encourage to attend and learn about career opportunities in New York.  The trip dates are March 26th - 28th.  Students provide their own transportation and should arrive in New York on Thursday, March 26th.  All students are required to attend meetings all day on Friday, March 27 (approximately 9:00 am - 5:00 pm).   If you are interested, please email Professor Lynn Doran.

The cost of the trip is $100 per student. This fee covers two nights at the hotel, breakfast Friday and Saturday mornings, and lunch on Friday. The fees paid by students cover approximately half of the expenses and the rest of the expenses are paid by the Capital Markets Research Center. The $100 is non-refundable unless you notify me of a replacement student to take your spot by March 14th. The NYSE limits the number of students we can take so only those students paying for the hotel rooms that are reserved are permitted on the trip. In other words, even if you could stay with friends/relatives in NY, you will still need to pay the $100 fee if you want to join the trip.

The application form is below. (Personal information such as Social Security number and birthdate are required for security to gain entry to the New York Stock Exchange). To reserve a spot on the trip, bring your application form and a check for $100 made out to “Georgetown University” (cash is also accepted) to 105G Old North. Only 27 students can come on the trip and applications will be accepted on a first come-first served basis.

Here are the details of the trip:

Dates:  March 26h - March 28th

Students should arrive on Thursday, April 3rd.  On Friday, April 4th, we will visit Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, and the New York Stock Exchange. Please note that all 3 meetings on Friday are MANDATORY. By coming on the trip students are agreeing to attend all 3 meetings – it reflects poorly on us if we have bad attendance. Friday evening, students will be on their own to enjoy the city. In the past, groups of students have organized to see Broadway shows, go to a baseball game, and other events. Students are free to depart Saturday or any time thereafter, although hotel accommodations are only provided for Thursday and Friday night.

Travel: Students must provide their own travel to and from New York City. The cheapest option is the Chinatown bus which can be as little as $35 roundtrip. Other options include airlines, Greyhound, or Amtrak. In the past, students with cars have carpooled (but parking in NY can be ridiculously expensive-even if split several ways).

Options for travel include: (1) The Chinatown Bus. You can find various companies online if you google Chinatown bus. For instance, New Century Travel is recommended and their website is www.2000coach.com.

(2) Shuttle on Delta or USAirways. Visit www.delta.com or www.usairways.com to search for flights from DCA to LGA. You can take the DC metro to Washington Reagan and a $15 shuttle transfer from LaGuardia to Grand Central Station and switch to the New York subway to arrive at the hotel. Cabs from Georgetown to DCA are around $15 and a cab from LGA to our hotel would be around $40.

(3) Amtrak Trains. Visit www.amtrak.com and search for trains from WAS to NYP. You can take the DC metro to Union Station and the New York subway system from Penn Station to our hotel. Cabs from Georgetown to Union station cost about $12 and a cab from Penn Station to the hotel would be around $15.

Hotel:

We have hotel reservations at the Hilton Times Square Hotel at 234 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. You are required to stay at the hotel Thursday and Friday, but students are welcome to stay in New York after Saturday and stay with family or friends. The rooms at the hotel will accommodate 2 students in 2 separate double beds. You can mark a roommate preference on the attached form.

Dress code: The dress code is business formal – suit and tie for men, and the equivalent for ladies.
