Education in Economic Markets
Date: March 25-27, 1999

The Education in Economic Markets conference played host to a number of deans and professors from historically minority colleges and universities. A grant from the Department of Education allowed us to teach the application of the Iowa Economic Market (IEM) program in which students deal with stock market simulations, to encourage more minority student to focus on financial economics and related careers in finance. The IEM was founded by Robert Forsythe, who presented an Executive Policy Seminar on the subject two years ago.

Before the Department of Education funded this program, not a single historically African American college or university or Hispanic serving institution had used the IEM in classroom applications. Students from more than 100 research universities have participated in the IEM and gained insights into the operations of financial markets and securities trading. The grant allows professors to introduce students to this teaching methodology in 90 classes at 45 US minority institutions.

Conference Remarks by William Hunter, Senior Vice President and Director of Research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
