Mission The center was founded June 30, 1974, by Dr. Robert W. Johnson, professor of finance at Purdue University's Krannert Graduate School of Management and a presidential appointee to the National Commission on Consumer Finance in 1969. During its 3-year existence the Commission coordinated a massive research program to study the operation of consumer credit markets in the United States. The Commission's multi-volume report delivered to Congress in 1972 established the value of academic research for guiding public policy toward credit markets. The Credit Research Center (CRC) was formed as a unit of the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue to meet that need. (For additional information about the origins of the Credit Research Center, click here.) Over the past three decades the center has gained a national reputation for its work in evaluating public policy toward credit markets. Center staff have frequently testified before Congress and state legislatures regarding the impact of regulations such as those pertaining to truth-in-lending disclosures, interest rate ceilings, equal credit opportunity regulations, debt collection practices, fair credit reporting procedures, and personal bankruptcy. The Center's academic affiliation and policy orientation brings sophisticated research expertise to bear on important regulatory issues. By subjecting its methods and results to external academic review, the Center maintains its integrity and objectivity as an unbiased resource for policymakers. In July of 1997, the Center relocated its
offices from Purdue University to Georgetown University's McDonough School of
Business in Washington, D.C. Location in the nation's capital provides
outstanding access to policymakers and researchers within the federal
government as well as numerous think-tanks, associations, and
universities in or near the greater Washington area. Georgetown
University has a distinguished record in public policy analysis. Within the McDonough School of Business, the CRC has established partnerships with the existing
Capital Markets Research Center and the new Center for Business and
Public Policy to encourage a collegial and cooperative dialogue on policy issues
between public and private sector executives. |
